September 4, 2026
Information as of Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026.
The North Carolina Local Government Commission, the state body that oversees local government finances, placed the City of Greensboro on its Unit Assistance List after reviewing the city's audit for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The Rhino Times reported the city received the notice Sept. 2 and that City Council held an emergency meeting Sept. 3.
According to the Rhino Times, the city's available fund balance stood at about $98.3 million, or 22.9 percent of spending, short of the 25 percent level the city targets. The video of the Sept. 3 emergency meeting is posted on the city's meetings portal.
What to watch: the City Council meets Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. and Oct. 20. Residents can ask the city for the LGC letter and the city's written response; both are public records.
