The four-year extension is the longest state law allows. The vote came at a Sept. 22 board work session.

Information as of Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026.
The Guilford County Board of Education voted Tuesday, Sept. 22, to extend Superintendent Whitney Oakley's contract four years, through June 30, 2030, the district announced. Four years is the maximum allowed by law.
Board Chair Deena Hayes cited a 93 percent graduation rate, the district's highest, and the fewest low-performing schools in more than a decade. The district also said it realigned nearly $5 million to balance its budget and changed its student device plan.
The district's announcement does not state the contract's salary terms or the vote count. Both are public; the contract can be requested from the district, and the meeting video is in the board's YouTube archive.
